International Class - Danish language & culture

International class is a unique way to learn about Denmark – Danish language as well as culture.

We practise the Danish language and learn about the Danish culture and society.

DANISH CULTURE AT HØJSKOLE IN DENMARK

Through sports, discussion and classroom teaching we develop an understanding of the Danish society, Danes and each other’s home countries, as we also share information about our own country.

A typical class will usually contain a Danish lesson followed by an introduction or discussion about a cultural theme. We relate to anything from politics and societal structures to leisure activities or cultural traditions/taboos.

We develop our personalities, knowledge and intercultural friendships in informal teaching processes that build upon respect and trust, where we will challenge your personal stances and your views on life.

The class usually makes excursions or visits to Denmark behind-the-scenes that tourists don’t get the chance to visit:

  • a typical Danish home
  • a Danish high school
  • a Danish care home
  • a Danish farm
  • a smaller Danish town

DANISH LANGUAGE CLASSES AT VEJLE SPORTS SCHOOL

Are you interested in learning Danish during your stay? We offer classes with instruction based on your individual level. The school provides a unique environment for practising your Danish throughout the day and in your free time. The social aspect of Vejle Sports School is very important and you will have rich opportunity to speak Danish with the students at the school at all hours.

Some Danish lessons are part of the normal weekly schedule and some lessons will add extra lessons to your time schedule.

Some students start from scratch, some student know a bit of Danish and other students speak well, but can't read or write. We work on different levels and often use texts, pictures, music and little films in class. We learn together and individually.

We get out on the floor and we nerd out the details when necessary. In class it is ok to laugh while you learn and try to pronounce a new difficult Danish word. Together, we feel the joy when cracking the code to the Danish language structure, learn a new sentence or when a student proudly announces that they have been having a conversation in Danish or given a presentation in another class.

We try to make the Danish classes fun and celebrate our successes. Most students find that learning more Danish adds a dimension to their time in Denmark.

WANT TO LEARN DANISH?

In class we focus on:

  • Learning more words
  • Getting better at small-talking in Danish
  • Building our confidence with regards to speaking Danish
  • Improving our understanding of Danish
  • Improving our reading and writing
Ann-Britt about international class - Danish language & culture

I enjoy working with international students and we all gain a lot from exchanging knowledge about culture, religion, traditions, language, behavior and much more. In class we primarily communicate in English but we challenge ourselves with Danish language twice a week and improve!

My international interest comes from travelling a lot and from work experince in Ghana, Greece, Turkey and Spain. To have relations around the world have great value to me. The international perspective on Vejle Idrætshøjskole creates energy in my life and valuable friendships.

Mette about international class - Danish language & culture

My personal international experiences primarily come from my one year stays working and living in France and England. It has given me a personal experience and knowledge of how it is to move to another country and learning how to navigate in a new culture with other game rules and not least a new language. It is always interesting to evoke reflection in the minds of the international students at our school regarding the challenge it is to manage yourself in a new country. As a teacher in international class I have the chance to plan special trips for the students to go see places where you will get a first hand view and experience of the Danish culture and way of organising society.

Besides my own stays abroad, I have been working with integration and teaching Danish language classes in companies and schools and have helped expatriated employees improving their intercultural and linguistic competencies. By being close to many nationalities I have gained knowledge about where and how the Danish culture resembles or differs from that of other countries. I love putting that experience into play with the international students at Vejle Sports School. - And I always think that it is amazing when students crack the language code and gain enough confidence to try and lead a conversation in a new language.

Mille about international class - Danish language & culture

I think International class is always interesting because of all the different nationalities and stories represented. We learn so much about life around the world just by being together, but also by exchanging opinions and experiences. We get a look into how people function when they’re out of their hometurf, and I like that we also help eac hother with exactly that – being (sometimes far) away from home.
