International Danes at Vejle Sports School

½ GAP YEAR IN DENMARK?

As a Danish folk high school Vejle Sports School welcomes a small group of international Danes who come to the school, because they want to challenge and develop themselves.

The international Danes usually also come strengthen their relations to Denmark: Danish language, culture, and network. Furthermore, they come to get lots of exciting experiences, to grow personally – and not least – because they love to do sports.

CLASSES IN DANISH OR ENGLISH?

The ability to speak and understand Danish varies a lot between the international Danes. Some can’t speak or understand any Danish, some understand, but want to become more comfortable speaking Danish. And others again speak Danish, but want to improve their reading or pronounciation.

At Vejle Sports School you choose your classes in Danish or English. In your sports classes you will experience a mix of Danish and English, but in your discussion classes you will chose classes in either Danish or English. If you have any questions, please contact us. If it becomes too dificult or you want more challenges, you are able to switch classes.

PRACTISE DANISH 24/7

You get optimum opportunities to practise your Danish 24/7 in an environment of Danes aged 18-25 years.

WHAT DO FORMER INTERNATIONAL DANES SAY...

All the students in the video have been asked to speak English for everyone to understand

MAYBE I WANT TO STUDY IN DENMARK...

I have become better in reading and writing Danish, because that I didn’t learn. I have only learnt speaking Danish. And now I know more words in Danish, because I keep asking the Danish students.

I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT THE LIFESTYLE IN DENMARK...

I learned a lot about the lifestyle in Denmark. It has helped me to get to know many new Danish people and people from around the world and it has given me many inputs to what I want to do with my life. I have learned a lot of Danish and English. The teachers were very good at getting us to form relations even though not everybody spoke Danish. It has been an amazing experience that I am so happy to have experienced.

I EXPANDED MY COMFORT ZONE...

The atmosphere here is very cozy. It is called ”hygge”. Everyone interacts very well. But the best thing here is the friends you make. The school organization is very social and encourages strong relations between students, but also between students and teachers.  I also have to stress the adventure trip to Austria where you get to do canyoning, white water rafting and more crazy stuff. It was amazing. I never thought I was gonna jump from 4 meters,  but I did!

This school is different from what I know in the US. You are a lot closer to your teachers for instance. They are kind of like your friends and we mesh well all together.

To begin with I was shy and timid and I got a bit frustrated, because I didn’t understand any Danish. And even though all the classes are in English or translated into English, I felt it was a bit hard. But then I just made a conscious decision to be more outgoing and to ask people for translation when I needed it. I found out that there was really no reason to be timid.

I have definitely learned a lot about myself – and about my strengths and weaknesses. I am a different person now than when I started at the school. It got me out of my comfort zone and made me push myself.

A NEW WORLD OPENED UP...

I really opens up your world a lot. It kind of shows you the big picture which is extremely nice. If felt so invited into that world with the Danish people being so open and welcoming to you.

I AM NEARLY FLUENT IN DANISH...

When I came here I spoke little to no Danish. I could say “tak for mad” or something along those lines. – But now I am nearly fluent.

I GOT A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF DANISH CULTURE...

I was able to practise my Danish and get a better understanding of Danish culture. The bonus was that you become so close friends very fast and that I have a lot of Danish friends now.
